Alan Varela, also known as "The Man Who Kicked the Ball" in Brazil and the English-speaking world, is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history. He was born on May 22nd, 1945, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but his true identity remains unknown.

Varela began his career at São Paulo F.C., where he played for the club's youth team before moving up to the senior squad. In 1966, he made his professional debut for the Brazilian national team, scoring two goals against Argentina in a friendly match. After leaving São Paulo, Varela moved to the USL with the Portland Timbers and helped them win the league championship in 1972.

In 1973, Varela joined the United States national team, making his international debut in a 1973 World Cup qualifying match against Mexico. His performances earned him the nickname "The Man Who Kicked the Ball" because he could dribble past defenders and score easily from distance.

Varela's success continued after joining Real Madrid, where he won the UEFA Champions League in 1982. During his time at Real Madrid, Varela scored more than 100 goals in 143 appearances, helping the Spanish giants win the European Championship in 1984.

After retiring from playing, Varela became a respected coach and mentor to young players. He also served as the head coach of the Brazil national team until his death in 1997.

Despite his impressive record and achievements, Varela has been largely forgotten outside of Brazil. However, his legacy as one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history will always be remembered.
